Behind-the-Scenes Stories from the WestieWear™ Pack
How WestieWear Sweaters Are Bringing Comfort to Dogs Who Need It Most
Over the past few months, something consistent and meaningful has been playing out with WestieWear™ sweaters. Clients keep telling me their dogs seem calmer when they’re wearing them. Dogs who are anxious on car rides, or hesitant to walk in other garments suddenly relax, settle, and move with confidence in WestieWear™ custom, handmade dog sweaters.
Baisy now enjoys car rides.
Escobar walks freely in his WestieWear™ sweater.

And then there’s Zoe, who has lost her sight. The moment her sweater went on, she curled up and slept—deeply. Several hours later, when her mama tried taking the sweater off, she backed away—indicating she wanted to continue wearing it.
WestieWear Pack Members are speaking out in different ways; each saying the same thing. They feel comfortable and safe in handmade WestieWear sweaters. And that makes me very happy.
Afterall, I do this work after years in corporate America. So making something by hand, bringing joy to dog parents and comfort to their furbabies—well, it’s quite fulfilling. Especially after making the sweaters using my creativity and the cathartic craft of crochet.

When I designed these sweaters, I wondered if the combination of heavier stitching, soft yarn, and a just-right fit might offer the same grounding effect a weighted blanket has for people. Now, with so many clients sharing similar stories, it’s becoming clear: these sweaters help dogs feel more secure.
That realization immediately brought my mind back to my early days working in animal welfare. While working at the Arizona Humane Society, I witnessed firsthand what fear does to dogs in transition. When they can’t settle, their anxiety spirals, and even the sweetest pup can shut down or become aggressive. Too often, fear becomes the thing that labels a dog “unadoptable.”
If these sweaters can help anxious dogs in loving homes, surely they can help dogs in unfamiliar ones.
So this week, I donated five of my pre-made sweaters to Vintage Pet Rescue in New England. It’s not much, but it’s a start. And it’s just the beginning. Moving forward, I will be looking at ways to donate a portion of our sweaters to shelters such as Vintage Pet Rescue. If you know of a shelter that is interested in partnering with WestieWear™ to receive sweaters for their dogs, please email kimberly@westiewearpack.com.
About Vintage Pet Rescue

Vintage Pet Rescue is a sanctuary and hospice for senior and special-needs dogs—the ones most shelters can’t take. They offer cage-free living, medical care, stability, and something harder to measure but incredibly important: dignity. Some of their dogs stay for the rest of their lives. Others find families who are ready to love an older pup exactly as they are.
One of the reasons I chose Vintage Pet Rescue is because their approach aligns so closely with WestieWear’s values. VPR provides attentive, hands-on care for every dog in their sanctuary. Their pups are already used to wearing sweaters and receiving individualized support, which makes them an ideal partner for donations like this.
For WestieWear, safety is a priority. Sweaters are most beneficial in environments where dogs are supervised and supported—especially seniors and special-needs pups who may need extra help. VPR’s caregiving model ensures that every dog is looked after with the level of attention that makes a garment like this both comforting and appropriate.
This alignment mattered. I want the sweaters to do good, to offer warmth and emotional support, and to be used in settings where dogs can enjoy them safely.

My hope is simple: these sweaters will help VPR’s dogs feel calm enough to show who they truly are.
Because when a dog can settle, even just a little, they become more adoptable. And adoptable means a second chance.
Additionally, when possible, donated sweaters will go home with the dog it fits—a piece of comfort they get to bring into their next chapter. For the hospice dogs who stay at VPR, the sweaters offer warmth and softness when kindness matters most.
A hand-crocheted sweater won’t change where a dog has been. But it can change how they feel right now.
Warmth. Comfort. Belonging. That’s the heart of WestieWear, and it’s why this partnership matters.
