Handcrafted warmth in the wake of trauma

The WestieWear™ Comfort Collective Brings Warmth and Aims at Aiding in Adoption

Missy WestieWear Sweater - Testimonial
Missy received a gifted WestieWear™ sweater after being attacked by a coyote in her Arizona back yard.

Missy, an 18-pound maltipoo, survived a coyote attack that nearly took her life. Harper, a 7-pound Yorkie, lost her brother to a traumatizing dog attack. Star came through rescue after losing her person.

These aren’t distant stories—they’re real dogs, real families, and real grief. And they’re exactly why WestieWear™ created the Comfort Collective.

Giving with Purpose & Intention

WestieWear™ was built around the belief that dogs are family. They carry our emotions, our routines, our comfort, and our healing. Unfortunately, some of these beloved companion animals suffer trauma for one reason or another. Some lose their parent due to illness or death, and others are overtly mistreated or neglected.

When a dog has been through trauma or loss, their adoption is often closely tied to their ability to adapt to the traumatic scenario. And often times, time is not on their side.

This is why I created the WestieWear™ Comfort Collective—a partnership with animal rescues and agencies willing to go beyond food and housing, and offer comfort measures to help ease the stress of these transitions.

Where It Started

In the mid-nineties, long before WestieWear™ existed, I worked as the Education Coordinator at the Arizona Humane Society. That experience changed how I understood dogs in crisis. I watched how profoundly stress affects shelter dogs—how fear can alter behavior, impact adoptability, and take a real toll on mental wellbeing.

Years later, when I started crocheting dog sweaters and decided to turn it into a business, that knowledge stayed with me. When I began selling dog sweaters, I immediately dreamed of being able to offer a portion of sweaters to rescue organizations who have the time to use them to bring comfort to stressed dogs.

Learning WestieWear™ Sweaters Offered More Than Warmth

After making only a few sweaters for four-legged clients, their parents reported astounding results. My sweaters were reducing anxiety in their dogs. The gentle weight and snug, made-to-fit comfort helps dogs settle, soften, and move with more confidence. I equate this effect to that of a weighted blanket. (Read Testimonials)

While formal research on weighted blankets specifically for dogs is still limited, studies on gentle pressure products like calming wraps (such as ThunderShirts) suggest that deep, consistent pressure can help reduce anxiety-related behaviors in many dogs.

Combined with what we’ve observed through real dogs wearing WestieWear™ sweaters, it reinforces the idea that a snug, thoughtfully made garment can offer more than warmth—it can offer comfort and emotional grounding during stressful times. All of these qualities matter deeply when a dog’s life has been disrupted, when they are learning to trust again. In the end, the Comfort Collective donations bring warmth while also reducing anxiety with the goal of aiding in their adoption.

The Dogs We’ve Supported

During those last four months of 2025, WestieWear™ donated eight handmade sweaters to Vintage Pet Rescue in Rhode Island. Three of the dogs whose stories we’re honored to know from Vintage Pet Rescue are mixed breeds who came through the rescue after losing their person for one reason or another.

Star received her sweater and was adopted soon after—just in time for the holidays.

One of those dogs is named Star. Star received her sweater and was adopted soon after—just in time for the holidays. Watching a dog move from uncertainty to belonging never gets old.

One of those sweaters was made possible by a social media follower who sponsored the donation—proof that the Comfort Collective is about more than just WestieWear™ giving back; it’s about creating opportunities for our community to bring comfort to dogs who need it most.

Additionally, WestieWear™ donated another two sweaters to individuals found through social media.

  • Missy, an 18-pound maltipoo, survived a coyote attack that nearly took her life.
  • Harper, a 7-pound Yorkie, lost her brother to a traumatizing dog attack.

Each donation represents a life, not a number. A personality. A story.

Why This Work Matters

Harper, a 7-pound Yorkie, lost her brother to a traumatizing dog attack

These stories inspire me to continue this work. Not only do I enjoy crocheting the garments by hand, I find a deeper purpose through this work knowing I am bringing a layer of peace and calm in addition to the warmth offered beneath my sweaters.

Giving back allows WestieWear™ to honor the dogs who need a little more softness in their world and to support the rescue organizations doing the quiet, patient work of care and advocacy.

This will always be part of who we are—not as a campaign, but as a commitment. It is my honor to make these garments for clients, both the two- and four-legged kind.
